What is plastic surgery?
Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty that encompasses both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic plastic surgery is dedicated to the enhancement of the face and body. Cosmetic surgical procedures offer patients the opportunity to reshape physical features and improve their self-esteem. Cosmetic procedures are usually not covered by health insurance. Reconstructive plastic surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. Reconstructive surgery is generally covered by most health insurance policies, although coverage for specific procedures and levels of coverage may vary greatly.
How can I be sure that my surgeon has adequate training and board certification?
While good credentials cannot guarantee a successful surgical outcome, they can significantly increase its likelihood. Currently any physician can call him/herself a plastic surgeon and perform any aesthetic procedure regardless of training. Doctors can even claim to be "board certified," but may, in fact, be certified by a board unrelated to plastic surgery, or even by an unrecognized board. Patients seeking to undergo plastic surgery procedures are encouraged to find a doctor certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify a surgeon in plastic surgery of the face and body. Ninety-seven percent of plastic surgeons certified by ABPS belong to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Many are also members of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Look for the logos! You can be assured that your ABPS-certified surgeon has:
- Completed at least 5 years of surgical residency training after medical school, including at least two years in plastic surgery.
- Passed comprehensive exams in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery and is qualified to perform procedures ranging from liposuction and facelifts to complicated wound repairs.
Even if you are considering having a surgical procedure in an office facility, you should check to be certain that your surgeon has privileges to perform that procedure(s) in a hospital setting.
How soon will I recover?
There is no specific time-frame for recovery. Each individual is different and no two surgeries are identical. Dr. Weiss will advise you of your expected recovery period on an individual basis.
